NIRVANA. Strange forms of pleasure

(orig.: NIRVANA - wundersame Formen der Lust)

The desire for sensual pleasure and seduction constantly inspires the imagination, as countless contemporary works of art and design attest. With some 200 exhibits by around 70 international creators, the exhibition explores the impact of the erotic on design, fashion and contemporary art. At the same time, designer and artist Mark Woods, jewellery artist Betony Vernon and young designer Nika Zupanc have been given carte blanche to express themselves on this theme. With mystery, humour and audacity, the selected works offer a different and imaginative perspective on the universe of the senses, showing how design, materials and the different levels of meaning of erotic or fetishistic worlds can be reinterpreted. These exclusive objects point up how we conceive of and perceive pleasure. The superior workmanship typical of luxury goods and traditional crafts has a key role to play, as do high quality materials such as leather, glass, velvet and precious metals.

This is the first time that an exhibition in Switzerland has presented an in-depth exploration of the ways in which seduction and pleasure are expressed in the contemporary and international context of art and design. Originally designed by mudac in Lausanne, NIRVANA has been brought to the German-speaking sphere by the Gewerbemuseum, which is complementing the exhibition with a special presentation entitled The scent of materialsm (Der Duft der Materialien).
