In his series “Real Time”, Maarten Baas plays around with the motif of clocks and sheds light on the phenomenon of time. The Dutch designer has been developing this series, for which he designs clocks in different forms, since 2009. These are complex works in which the time of day is represented through film clips. Baas addresses the concept of “real time”, which refers both to the actual time indicated in the film and to the time taken to show it. Maarten Baas’ Real Time Clocks thus involve performative videos filmed over 12 hours, each of which also takes 12 hours to be viewed in full.

The solo exhibition “Maarten Baas – New Times” presents a selection of his grandfather clocks, video projections and room installations. Baas combines the disciplines of film, performance, engineering, art and design in order to reimagine clocks and reflect on the relativity of time. In so doing, he quite literally invites the spectator to watch time passing.
